Project Description
As Prime Contractor, Coastal Wolf Construction led the rehabilitation and upgrade of the Alert Bay waterfront town square and retaining wall system.The project included demolition, excavation, culvert replacement, lock block retaining wall construction, reinforced concrete slab on grade, monument relocation, and electrical infrastructure upgrades.
Scope of work included:
• Installation of 750mm interlocking concrete lock block retaining wall (5–6 block configuration) with Tensar geogrid tieback system
• Subgrade preparation and coordination with geotechnical engineer for bearing verification
• Replacement of 450mm Ø HDPE storm culvert and tie-ins to existing infrastructure
• Installation of 125mm–200mm reinforced concrete slab on grade with thickened edges and anchor zones
• Coordination of anchor ring assemblies and structural embed plates
• Monument relocation and structural bracket installation
• Electrical conduit installation and receptacle infrastructure coordination
• Surface restoration, grading, and parking improvements
Cortney Borgfjord served as Site Superintendent responsible for:
• Overall site supervision and subcontractor coordination
• Scheduling and daily work planning
• Quality control and inspection coordination
• Structural and geotechnical review coordination
• Safety management and WorkSafeBC compliance
• Liaison with Village of Alert Bay, consultants, and NBDC representatives
• Managing construction adjacent to active public spaces and waterfront conditions
The project required coordination of structural, civil, electrical, and landscape disciplines within a constrained municipal site, demonstrating experience with retaining walls, reinforced concrete structures, municipal infrastructure, and public-sector construction.
